What to do right now, before you get here
Knocked-out tooth. Pick it up by the crown, never the root. Do not scrub it. Rinse gently with milk or saline if it is dirty. Put it back in the socket if you can, or keep it in milk. Call us immediately, because the first hour matters most.
Severe toothache. Rinse with warm salt water and take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the packet. Do not put aspirin directly on the gum, it burns the tissue. A cold compress on the outside of the cheek helps.
Broken or chipped tooth. Rinse your mouth with warm water and keep any pieces. A cold compress reduces swelling. Avoid chewing on that side.
Lost filling or crown. Keep the crown if you have it. Dental cement from a pharmacy can hold it temporarily, but do not use household glue.
Bleeding that will not stop. Firm pressure with clean gauze for ten minutes. If it continues after twenty minutes, go to a hospital emergency department.
