George Brown runs three different student dental plans through three different insurers, and which one you are on changes what you get. Here is how to tell them apart, what each one covers, and where to use it. Evenings and Saturdays, one bus from the Waterfront campus.

Three plans, three insurers, three sets of rules
This is the part almost every dental website skips. The Student Association of George Brown College says plainly that each of its three student health plans is provided by a different insurance company and carries different coverage. So a coverage figure you read somewhere else may simply not apply to you. Work out which plan you are on first.
Domestic Student Plan
Covers Canadian and immigrant students. This is the plan the coverage table below is based on. You are enrolled automatically as a full-time student unless you opted out.
International Post-Secondary
For international students in a post-secondary program. Coverage and the insurer are different from the domestic plan, and you generally cannot opt out unless you have Canadian provincial coverage.
International ESL Plan
For international students taking only ESL classes. This is the most limited of the three. If you are on it, contact the Student Association office before booking anything beyond a checkup.
What your George Brown dental insurance covers
These figures are for the domestic student plan, which is the one most George Brown Polytechnic students are on. Compared with a lot of student plans this one is generous, because it holds at 80% for the treatments that actually cost money rather than dropping away once you go past a cleaning.

The annual maximum is $750 per coverage period. The policy year runs 1 September to 31 August if you started in the fall, or 1 January to 31 August if you started in the winter. Coverage differs on the international and ESL plans. Percentages, limits and maximums are set by the Student Association and its insurers, not by us, and they change from year to year. We verify your own coverage before treatment either way.

The WAVE clinic on campus, or a private dentist?
George Brown runs its own dental clinic at the Waterfront campus, where students in the School of Dental Health treat the public under supervision. It is genuinely good value and we will say so. It is also not the right answer for every situation, so here is the honest comparison rather than a sales pitch.

A dentist near George Brown College, whichever campus you are at
If you are looking for a George Brown College dentist, we are at 745 Danforth Ave, two minutes from Pape station. From the Waterfront campus that is a single bus with no transfer. From the other two it is one change.
Waterfront campus
51 Dockside Drive. The 72 Pape bus runs from Queens Quay East straight to Pape station. One bus, roughly twenty minutes.
St. James campus
200 King Street East. Take the 504 King streetcar east to Broadview station, then Line 2 two stops to Pape. About twenty minutes.
Casa Loma campus
Kendal Avenue. Dupont station on Line 1 to St George, then Line 2 eastbound to Pape. About twenty five minutes.
Or just come from home
Plenty of George Brown students live in Riverdale, Leslieville and along the Danforth. If that is you, we are the clinic near your place rather than near your class, which usually matters more.
Hours that work around a class schedule
Anyone hunting for a George Brown student dentist runs into the same problem, which is that most clinics shut at five. We stay open late twice a week and all day Saturday, and we keep the same hours through reading week and exam periods.

Tuesday and Thursday evenings are the slots students book most, and Saturday mornings fill up fastest during term. If you are placed at a co-op or working shifts, tell us when you call and we will find something that fits.
Your plan runs all summer
If you were full-time during the school year, your dental coverage stays active until 31 August even if you are not taking summer courses. Summer is the easiest time to get an appointment and most students do not realise they are still covered.
Looking for a George Brown emergency dentist?
Worth knowing before something goes wrong: the WAVE clinic on campus states plainly that it does not provide emergency dental treatment. So if you are in pain, campus is not the place to call.
Call us on (647) 930-5884 as early in the day as you can. We hold time for urgent cases and will see you the same day where we have space. On Tuesday and Thursday we are open until 8pm.

If you have facial swelling with difficulty breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest hospital emergency department rather than waiting for an appointment.

Because there are three plans and three insurers, the first thing we do is check which one you are actually on. Nothing gets booked until you know the number.

We confirm what your specific plan pays before treatment, not after, including how much of your $750 maximum is left.
Predetermination if needed
Anything expected to cost more than $300 goes to your insurer for approval first, so there are no surprises on the day.
You pay only the difference
Where your insurer supports direct billing we submit for you, and you pay only the portion your plan does not cover.
Questions George Brown students ask
Do I have George Brown student dental insurance?
If you are a full-time student at George Brown Polytechnic, almost certainly. The Student Association health and dental fee is included in your tuition and enrolment is automatic. Which of the three plans you are on depends on whether you are a domestic student, an international post-secondary student, or an international ESL student. If you opted out through wespeakstudent.com you will not be covered. The Student Association benefits line is 416-415-2443.
How much will a George Brown dental cleaning cost me?
On the domestic plan, an examination with x-rays and scaling is covered at 80%, so you would pay the remaining 20%. We check your exact coverage and tell you the figure before we start. If cost is the main thing and you have time to spare, the WAVE clinic on campus does cleanings from around $20, though it takes four or five appointments.
Does my plan cover George Brown wisdom teeth removal?
Yes, extractions are covered at 80%, but only two wisdom teeth per policy year. If all four need to come out, it is usually worth doing two now and two after your plan year resets on 1 September. We will assess which two are the priority and send a predetermination to your insurer first, since the cost will be over the $300 threshold.
Is there a dentist near George Brown College that takes my plan?
Yes. From the Waterfront campus the 72 Pape bus brings you to our door with no transfer, about twenty minutes. From St. James it is the 504 King streetcar to Broadview then two stops on Line 2.
